Our Buccal Midazolam training courses are designed to update your knowledge and practical skills in the Safe Administration of Buccal Midazolam. Training packages are avaialble that also include: Epilespy Awareness and Safe Administration of Emergency Medication.

Buccal Midazolam is an alternative treatment to rectal diazepam and works as a relaxant to assist in controlling certain types of seizure. The administration of Buccal Midazolam is a clinical procedure used in an emergency situation to administer 'rescue medication' via the buccal cavity. 

We provide professional knowledge and a simulated clinical practice session during training.

This course is ideal for clinicians who have no prior experience of performing the safe administration of Buccal Midazolam procedure and want to develop their clinical skills or require the achievement of work based competency. Prior completion of a Medication Awareness course is required to attend this course.

Assessment Type:  Knowledge Assessment and Work Based Competency Assessment

This course is ideal for clinicians who have already achieved competency to practice and require an annual knowledge based refresher or update. This course is also suitable for people who have a general interest in the Safe Administration of Buccal Midazolam and do not require initial competency.

• Have an understanding of epilepsy and epilepsy management.
• Have an understanding of the physiological and cultural effects of epilepsy.
• Understand the importance of care plans and risk assessments to ensure a safe treatment and effective treatment.
• Be able to recognise seizures and deliver the correct first aid where necessary.
• Recognise and emergency situation and take the appropriate action.
• Understand the theory and practice of administering Buccal Midazolam.
• Have knowledge to administer Buccal Midazolam in accordance with the individual care plan.

At the end of the session attendees will be familiar with:

• The safe management including storage and disposal of the medication.
• How the medication works, how it effects the person and what side effects may occur and know how to find this information.
• The correct stages of preparing, checking, administering and monitoring the effects of the drug.
• The actions to be taken if there is a problem in administering the medication.
• The identify of key aspects of policies, procedures and responsibilities relating to the medication.

Important Information: A competency framework is included in this training. Competency is achieved in the workplace following the training. Each procedure needs to be signed off by a suitably qualified and experienced senior member of staff. The completed document can then be used in the workplace to identify the individuals’ competence.
