CATHETERISATION TRAINING

Our Catheterisation training courses are designed to update your knowledge and practical skills in Catheterisation. Urinary Catheterisation is a medical procedure used to drain and collect urine from the bladder. We provide both professional knowledge and simulated clinical practice sessions for Urethral and Supra-pubic Catheterisation.


Course: Catheterisation Training

Duration: Full Day

Contact Hours: 6 hours

Certification: Awareness Course

Assessment Type:  Knowledge and Work Based Competency Assessment


This course is ideal for clinicians who have no prior experience of performing the Catheterisation Procedure and want to develop their clinical skills or require the achievement of work based competency. 


Course: Catheterisation Training [Update]

Duration: Half Day

Contact Hours: 3 hours

Certification: Awareness Course

Assessment Type:  Knowledge and Work Based Competency Assessment


This course is ideal for clinicians who have already achieved competency to perform this procedure and require an annual knowledge based refresher or update in Catheterisation. This course is also suitable for people who have a general interest in Catheterisation who do not require initial competency.

  • Definitions and methods of catheterisation
  • Differences between supra-pubic and urethral catheters
  • Advantages and disadvantages of urinary catheters
  • Reasons for catheterisation
  • Male and female anatomy
  • Male catheterisation procedure (knowledge and simulated practical session)
  • Female catheterisation procedure (knowledge and simulated practical session)
  • Post procedure catheter positioning
  • Post procedure check list
  • Record keeping

Learning Outcomes and Assessments

By the end of the Catheterisation training course attendees will be familiar with:

  • Reasons for Catheterisation
  • Equipment selection
  • Processes involved with Male Catheterisation
  • Processes involved with Female Catheterisation
  • Processes involved with Urethral Suprapubic Catheterisation.

  • Knowledge Based Theory Test
  • Simulated Clinical Assessment
  • Work Based Competency Assessment

Important Information: A competency framework is included in this training. Competency is achieved in the workplace following the training. Each procedure needs to be signed off by a suitably qualified and experienced senior member of staff. The completed document can then be used in the workplace to identify the individuals’ competence.
