Our EFAW is available at Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF). Please speak to our customer service team for more details.



This regulated qualification is ideal for those already working or preparing to work within industry wishing to become a First Aider in the workplace for the purposes of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations (NI) 1982. The recommended  course duration is 6 hours. The qualification is assessed via on-going oral and/or written questioning and practical demonstration.


Course: Emergency First Aid at Work [EFAW]

Duration: 1 Day

Contact Hours: 6 hours

Certification: Awareness or Regulated Qualification Level 3

Assessment Type: Knowledge Assessment, Group Discussions and Practical Demonstration


All successful students will be issued with an Emergency First Aid at Work Certificate, detailing their achievement. The HSE dictate, that to be valid in the workplace, learners must retake the First Aid at Work qualification before the expiry of 3 years from the date that the original qualification was achieved.


All our first aid courses fully meet the UK and European Resuscitation Council Guidelines 2015 as per the HSE requirements.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a first aider
  • Be able to assess an incident 
  • Be able to provide first aid to an unresponsive casualty 
  • Be able to provide first aid to a casualty who is choking  
  • Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with external bleeding 
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty who is in shock 
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with minor injuries 
  • Be able to conduct a secondary survey
  • Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected injuries to bones, muscles and joints
  • Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected head and spinal injuries
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected chest injury
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with burns and scolds
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with an eye injury
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with sudden poisoning

Learning Outcomes and Assessments

At the end of the session attendees will be able to:


  • Identify the role and responsibilities of a first aider 
  • Identify how to minimise the risk of infection to self and others 
  • Identify the need for consent to provide first aid 
  • Conduct a scene survey 
  • Conduct a primary survey of a casualty 
  • Summon appropriate assistance when necessary 
  • Identify when to administer Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) 
  • Demonstrate CPR using a manikin 
  • Justify when to place a casualty into the recovery position
  • Demonstrate how to place a casualty into the recovery position 
  • Identify how to administer first aid to a casualty who is experiencing a seizure
  • Identify when choking is: - mild - severe
  • Demonstrate how to administer first aid to a casualty who is choking 
  • Identify the severity of external bleeding 
  • Demonstrate control of external bleeding 
  • Recognise a casualty who is suffering from shock
  • Identify how to administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock 
  • Identify how to administer first aid to a casualty with: - small cuts - grazes - bruises - small splinters
  • Identify how to administer first aid to a casualty with minor burns and scalds
  • Identify the information to be collected when gathering a casualty history
  • Demonstrate how to conduct a head to toe survey
  • Recognise suspected fractures, dislocations, strains and sprains
  • Identify how to administer first aid for fractures, dislocations, strains and sprains
  • Demonstrate how to apply a support sling and an elevated sling
  • Recognise a suspected head injury and spinal injury
  • Identify how to administer first aid for a suspected head injury
  • Demonstrate how to administer first aid for a suspected spinal injury
  • Recognise a suspected: Flail chest / penetrating chest injury
  • Identify how to administer first aid for a Flail chest / penetrating chest injury 
  • Identify the factors that affect the severity of burns and scalds
  • Identify how to administer first aid for burns involving: dry heat/wet heat/electricity/chemicals
  • Identify how to administer first aid for eye injuries involving: Dust/chemicals/embedded objects
  • Identify the routes that poisons can take to enter the body
  • Identify how to administer first aid to a casualty affected by sudden poisoning
  • Identify sources of information for treating those affected by sudden poisoning
