Our Enteral Feeding training, also referred to as Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy [PEG] training, is designed to increase your knowledge of the enteral feeding process and provide you with the practical experience to different feeding methods.

This course is ideal for clinicians who have no prior experience of the enteral feeding procedure and want to develop their clinical skills or require the achievement of work based competency.

Duration: Half Day

Assessment Type: Knowledge Assessment and Work Based Competency Assessment

This course is ideal for clinicians who have already achieved competency to practice and require an annual knowledge based refresher or update. This course is also suitable for people who have a general interest in the enteral feeding process and do not require initial competency.

• Demonstrate an understanding and discuss the theoretical concepts of enteral feeding via: Naso-Gastric tube, PEG tube, RIG tube, Balloon Gastrostomy, Jejunal tubes.
• Understand the purpose of enteral feeding.
• Recognise different types of enteral tubes.
• Understand the indications and contra indications of enteral feeding.
• Understand the procedures for feeding and administering medications via enteral tubes. 
• Recognise complications and how to report them. 
• Know how to care for and maintain enteral feeding tubes. 

At the end of the session attendees will be familiar with:

• The purpose of enteral feeding
• Neurological conditions which may require enteral feeding
• Different types of enteral tubes
• Indications and contra indications of enteral feeding
• The care of naso gastric tube and implementing balloon gastrostomy
• The procedures for feeding and administering medications via enteral tubes
• Recognising, dealing with and reporting complications
• The care and maintenance of enteral feeding tubes
• Procedures for effective mouth care
• Documentation and record keeping

Important Information: A competency framework is included in this training. Competency is achieved in the workplace following the training. Each procedure needs to be signed off by a suitably qualified and experienced senior member of staff. The completed document can then be used in the workplace to identify the individuals’ competence.
