Our Nutrition and Hydration training enables care givers and support workers to identify possible outcomes of malnutrition and under hydration and suggests how these potential problems can be overcome by encouraging and supporting positive eating and drinking.

This course is ideal for people who have no prior experience of supporting positive Nutrition and Hydration.


Course: Nutrition and Hydration [Update]

Duration: Half Day

Contact Hours: 3 hours

Certification: Awareness Course

Assessment Type: Knowledge Assessment 


This course is ideal for people who require an annual update and have already gained experience and understanding of supporting positive Nutrition and Hydration.

Learning Objectives

  • To provide attendees with the knowledge and understanding of nutrition and hydration.
  • To define what is meant by Nutrition.
  • To define what is meant by Hydration.
  • To identify the principles of promoting nutrition and hydration.
  • To explore the principles of good practice. 
  • To identify benefits and barriers within Health and Social Care settings.
  • To identify relevant legislation, regulations and guidance.
  • To explore the key principles of an individuals nutritional requirements. 

Learning Outcomes and Assessments

At the end of the session attendees will be familiar with:

  • Promotion of Nutrition and Fluid intake
  • Problems that prevent people from eating correctly
  • Identifying problems that arise from malnutrition
  • Timing of meals and snacks
  • The environment in which meals and snacks are served
  • Preparing for mealtimes
  • Encouragement of independence and involvement in mealtimes
  • Providing support and encouraging positivity at mealtimes
  • Risk assessing residents
  • Identifying malnutrition
  • Identifying signs of dehydration
  • Reasons to hydrated
  • Positive promotion of hydration
  • The food groups and food safety.
