This course is ideal for clinicians who have no prior experience of the syringe driver process and want to develop their clinical skills or require the achievement of work based competency.

Assessment Type: Knowledge Assessment and Work Based Competency Assessment

This course is ideal for clinicians who have already achieved competency to perform this procedure and require an annual knowledge based refresher or update. This course is also suitable for people who have a general interest in the syringe driver process and do not require initial competency.

- Discuss the benefits and disadvantages of a Syringe Driver 

- Discuss the indications for a Syringe Driver

- Define a "Syringe Driver"

- Discuss the considerations when using a Syringe Driver

- Define the principles of "Informed Consent" and "Best Interest"

- Discuss the term "Duty of Care" relating to professional conduct

- Define the importance of "Record Keeping".

- Discuss the importance of monitoring the patient 

- Discuss the following:

            Changing of the driver
            Medications and Compatibility 
            Alteration of dosage and addition of new medicines
            Suitable Infusion Sites
            Changing the Infusion Site
            Management of breakthrough pain symptoms 
            What to do if the patient dies whilst the syringe driver is running

- Discuss the potential complications of using a Syringe Driver and how to respond to complications in a safe and timely manner. 

At the end of the session attendees will be familiar with:

• When to use a syringe driver and it’s benefit
• The risk management issues and the limitations of certain devices
• How to set up, prime and check the syringe driver is ready for use
• Record keeping and documentation of syringe driver use
• Demonstration of the safe administration of drugs via syringe driver devices within the scope of the relevant policy and guidelines
• Applied practical workstation and simulated practical assessment
• Ethical and legal responsibilities

Important Information: A competency framework is included in this training. Competency is achieved in the workplace following the training. Each procedure needs to be signed off by a suitably qualified and experienced senior member of staff. The completed document can then be used in the workplace to identify the individuals’ competence.
