Our Tracheostomy Awareness training course is designed to increase your knowledge of tracheostomy care and provide you with the theoretical and practical experience of providing tracheostomy care.


Course: Tracheostomy Awareness

Duration: Full Day

Contact Hours: 6 hours

Certification: Awareness Course

Assessment Type: Knowledge Assessment and Work Based Competency Assessment


This course is ideal for clinicians who have no prior experience of providing tracheostomy care and want to develop their clinical skills or require the achievement of work based competency.


Course: Tracheostomy Awareness [Update]

Duration: Half Day

Contact Hours: 3 hours

Certification: Awareness Course

Assessment Type: Knowledge Assessment and Work Based Competency Assessment


This course is ideal for clinicians who have already achieved competency to perform tracheostomy care and require an annual knowledge based refresher or update. This course is also suitable for people who have a general interest in tracheostomy care and do not require initial competency.

Learning Objectives

This course covers the following criteria:


• the normal range of oxygen saturation

• breathing difficulties
• pallor
• cyanosis

• recession
• agitation
• panic
• respiratory distress 

• respiratory infection

• record keeping and data protection
• consent

• dignity and privacy
• confidentiality
• accessing support and information

• anatomy of the upper and lower respiratory tract

• emergency contact procedures 

• emergency equipment
• emergency tube change
• the use of smaller tubes

• the use of CPR
• the use of an ambu bags

• the use of an Auto External Defibrillator (AED)

• the complications of tape changes

• the risks to the patient
• the risk to the tracheostomy/stoma site
• planning the equipment that will be needed 

• the complications of changing the tube in different environments
• the action to be taken in the event of complications

• obtaining consent
• maintaining dignity and privacy
• using personal protective equipment
• complying with infection control procedures before, during and after tracheostomy change

• preparing the environment
• preparing the equipment
• evaluating respiratory patterns pre and post tracheostomy change
• checking the tapes
• checking skin integrity
• disposing of waste
• recording the procedure
• reporting the procedure


Also included with this training course: 


CPR for 'Neck Breathers' includes Practical Demonstration Session:
• cardiopulmonary resuscitation [CPR] resuscitation council guidelines [2015]
• use of auto external defibrillator[AED]
• use of a bag valve mask [BVM]


Suction Therapy including Practical Demonstration Session:
• use of suction machine to maintain a patent airway

Learning Outcomes and Assessments

At the end of the session attendees will be able to:


  • Understand how the respiratory status is assessed
  • Understand the reason for a tracheostomy
  • Understand how to respond to complications in tracheostomy care
  • Understand safety procedures for managing a tracheostomy away from the home environment
  • Be able to change a tracheostomy.

Important Information: A competency framework is included in this training. Competency is achieved in the workplace following the training. Each procedure needs to be signed off by a suitably qualified and experienced senior member of staff. The completed document can then be used in the workplace to identify the individuals’ competence.
